Here they primarily produces powerful red wines, which came to international attention in the 1990s.
Priorat is one of only two wine regions in Spain to qualify as Spanish Denominació d'Origen Qualificada, the highest qualification level for a wine region according to Spanish wine regulations, alongside with Rioja. The vineyards here are planted on slopes on terraces at altitudes of between 100 meters - 700 meters (approx. 300 - 2300 feet) above sea level. Priorat is almost entirely surrounded by the beautiful mountain Montsant.
